How a Montecristi Hat Is Handwoven: Traditional Weaving Process

Hand-weaving a Montecristi hat is an art form expressed through our hands. Every hour, every day, a story unfolds within each hat, an Ecuadorian craft that embodies culture and identity. We are passionate about crafting and designing custom hats for both men and women. At Modesto Hats, our artisan workshop, we dedicate ourselves to crafting fine Panama Montecristi hats from toquilla straw.

The Toquilla Straw Hat, handwoven by the hands of Montecristi, is recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and protected with a Denomination of Origin.

On August 5, 2026, the arrival of the Crown Princess cruise ship to the port of Manta (Ecuador) was highlighted, whose tourists took excursions to Montecristi in Modesto Hats to learn about the making of the toquilla straw hat.

We were delighted to welcome tourists and share our history, traditions, and the expertise of Modesto Hats, which designs the finest, highest-quality hats.
At Modesto Hats, we are proud to showcase this traditional Ecuadorian craftsmanship and share the story behind every Montecristi Panama hat. More than a handmade accessory, each hat represents the cultural heritage, dedication, and skill of the artisans who preserve this unique tradition.
Once the weaving is completed, the hat goes through additional finishing processes to achieve its distinctive shape and refined appearance. The result is an authentic Ecuadorian Panama hat, handcrafted in Montecristi and made from natural toquilla straw.
