More than a hat, an Ecuadorian work of art.
The toquilla straw hat, incorrectly known worldwide as the “Panama Hat,” is, in reality, an artisanal treasure born in Ecuador, specifically in the Montecristi canton and the rural parish of Pile, in the province of Manabí. Its fineness, lightness and meticulous weaving process have elevated it to the status of a collector’s item.
But what guarantees its authenticity and supreme quality? The Denomination of Origin (DO), a seal that protects and certifies this ancient art.
What is the Montecristi Hat?
The real Montecristi hat is a fine accessory woven completely by hand using the fibers of the Carludovica palmata plant, known locally as toquilla straw.
Origin: Montecristi and the community of Pile, Ecuador.
Material: Toquilla straw (Carludovica palmata).
UNESCO Recognition: The traditional weaving of the fine Ecuadorian toquilla straw hat was
declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2012.
